Search "AI customer support Shopify" and you'll get a wall of apps promising to "automate 90% of support" and "boost sales with AI." Most of them oversell and underdeliver.

In this post I compare the 5 most common approaches to AI support for Shopify: what each does well, where it fails, and who it suits.

Full disclosure: we build custom AI support, so we have a stake in this. I'll be honest about where our approach fits and where a simpler option might work better for you.

The Landscape: Types of AI Support

Before comparing specific tools, it helps to know the categories:

Category 1: Rule-based chatbots Pre-programmed flows. "If customer says X, respond Y." No actual AI.

Category 2: AI-enhanced chatbots Use language models to understand questions, but limited to FAQ-style responses. Can't access real data.

Category 3: Integrated AI assistants Connect to Shopify for order data, can take actions, trained on your specific content.

Category 4: Custom AI agents Built specifically for your business, deep product training, handles complex use cases.

Each category trades off simplicity, cost and capability differently.

Option 1: Shopify Inbox + Sidekick (Built-in)

What it is: Shopify's native messaging with AI suggestions

Cost: Free (included with Shopify)

What it does well:

  • ●Zero setup, already in your Shopify admin
  • ●AI suggests responses based on your store data
  • ●Integrates with Shop app messaging
  • ●Good for very basic inquiries

Where it falls short:

  • ●AI "suggests" but doesn't auto-respond, so you still do the work
  • ●Limited to Shopify's built-in capabilities
  • ●No complex conversation handling
  • ●No 24/7 automation (still requires human to send)

Best for: Very small stores (<100 orders/month) who want a free starting point

Verdict: Free and built in, which is great. It assists you without automating anything, so you still answer every ticket by hand.

Option 2: Tidio / Gorgias Automate

What it is: Help desk platforms with AI add-ons

Cost: $29-150/month (varies by plan and volume)

What it does well:

  • ●Established platforms with good core help desk features
  • ●AI can auto-respond to common questions
  • ●Integrates with Shopify for order data
  • ●Pre-built templates and flows
  • ●Good analytics and reporting

Where it falls short:

  • ●AI capabilities are add-ons, not core
  • ●Often still rule-based under the hood
  • ●Limited product-specific knowledge
  • ●Generic responses that feel like a bot
  • ●Complex pricing as you scale

Best for: Brands already using these platforms who want to add basic automation

Verdict: These are help desks first and AI second. The automation helps with incremental improvement, but don't expect dramatic results.

Option 3: ChatGPT/Claude via Zapier

What it is: DIY integration connecting AI models to your support channels

Cost: $20-100/month (API costs + Zapier)

What it does well:

  • ●Uses powerful language models (GPT-4, Claude)
  • ●Highly customizable if you're technical
  • ●Can be trained on custom prompts
  • ●Cheapest option for smart responses

Where it falls short:

  • ●Requires technical setup and maintenance
  • ●No native Shopify integration (can't pull order data)
  • ●Fragile: breaks when things change
  • ●No escalation handling
  • ●No dashboard or analytics
  • ●You become the support for your support system

Best for: Technical founders who want to experiment cheaply

Verdict: Impressive in demos, painful in production. You'll spend more time maintaining it than it saves you. Good for learning, bad for running a business.

Option 4: Specialized eCommerce AI (Siena, Rep AI, etc.)

What it is: AI support tools built specifically for eCommerce

Cost: $300-1000/month

What it does well:

  • ●Built for eCommerce use cases from the ground up
  • ●Native Shopify integration
  • ●Can access order data, product info
  • ●Better product recommendations than generic AI
  • ●Purpose-built for support workflows

Where it falls short:

  • ●Still somewhat templated (not truly custom)
  • ●May not understand your specific products deeply
  • ●Complex products still confuse them
  • ●Limited customization of AI behavior
  • ●Locked into their platform/limitations

Best for: Mid-size brands ($1-10M revenue) who want better-than-basic automation without full custom build

Verdict: The sweet spot for many brands, since purpose-built tools beat generic ones. If you have complex products or need the AI to handle subtle questions (sizing, compatibility, specialized use cases), you'll hit their limits.

Option 5: Custom AI Agents

What it is: AI built specifically for your business, your products, your workflows

Cost: $500-2000+/month (or custom pricing)

What it does well:

  • ●Trained on YOUR specific products, policies, and brand voice
  • ●Handles complex use cases (size guidance, shade matching, compatibility)
  • ●Deep integration with your specific systems
  • ●Learns and improves over time
  • ●Feels like talking to a knowledgeable employee, not a bot
  • ●Achieves 80%+ automation rates

Where it falls short:

  • ●Higher cost (though ROI usually justifies)
  • ●Requires implementation time (2-4 weeks)
  • ●Needs your input for training
  • ●Overkill for simple businesses

Best for: Brands where support is complex, volume is significant, or support is a competitive differentiator

Verdict: This is the approach behind the 80% reduction in support workload you read about in our case studies. It takes a real implementation project instead of a plug-and-play install, but for brands with real support challenges it's the only option that fully solves them.

How to Decide

Choose Shopify Inbox if:

  • ●You're under 100 orders/month
  • ●You don't mind answering tickets manually
  • ●You want free

Choose Tidio/Gorgias Automate if:

  • ●You're already on these platforms
  • ●You want incremental improvement
  • ●Your products are straightforward

Choose DIY with GPT/Zapier if:

  • ●You're technical and enjoy building
  • ●You're experimenting
  • ●You have simple use cases

Choose Specialized eCommerce AI if:

  • ●You're mid-size ($1-10M)
  • ●You want better automation without custom build
  • ●Your products aren't highly complex

Choose Custom AI if:

  • ●Your products require expertise to guide (sizing, compatibility, technical specs)
  • ●You have complex operational workflows
  • ●Support volume justifies investment
  • ●You want 80%+ automation, not 30%

Choosing on Fit

No single tool is best for everyone. The right choice depends on:

  • ●Your volume: Low volume doesn't justify expensive solutions
  • ●Your product complexity: Simple products, simpler AI
  • ●Your budget: Better AI costs more (but usually has better ROI)
  • ●Your goals: Incremental improvement vs. transformation

Most brands choose on price or marketing when they should choose on fit. Once you count the human labor still required, a $29/month tool that handles 20% of tickets costs more than a $500/month tool that handles 80%.

Do the math, and compare total cost and results instead of the sticker price.
